Go Skateboarding Day photos – Part 1

Here’s some photos from the action on Thursday’s “Go Skateboarding Day” activities. I’ve got a few more I’ll post in the next day or so. The park was kind of over run by an attention seeking rat for some reason, look closely and you might spot it in the photos.

The files are fairly large so they might take a wee bit to download if your broadband isn’t so fast (if you’re on dial up, go make a cup of tea!).

Go Skateboarding Day was absolutely amazing. It’s probably still happening right now, at 10:30pm. I had to give up with aching legs after a 7 hour shift at the park.

To be honest there were sometimes more bikes than skateboards, but what the population lacked was made up for in sheer muscle and grunt from those that did make it. I managed to take the day off work, and was mightily stoked that I did.

Pictures from Rick and others will be posted up soon. That ‘s an absolute guarantee.

Let it not be said, that for this day, the rat was not gotten ‘oot.’ Happy IGSD!

The fund raising to get a flat-bar installed in the park is still ongoing.

We have had three more pledges, from Nick, Andy and Sam which takes us to £70.

Nice one guys! The graph is getting interesting.

Get on yer magic-zoom-plank

Get on it, get your Rat Out. (one’s inner ‘skate-rat’ steez)

Come and carve and slashyour little heart out.

Ie: Do some of this:

ok… rock on.

By the way!!

Only another £110 needed!

All we need is another 11 people to give tenner each!

Then we can get the flat-bar installed…

If you want your park improved then speak up and pledge the dosh!

DON’T BE SHY!… (or tight)

June 11 – Photo Comp / Flat bar installation – UPDATE 12th

The Flat Bar Campaign:

This is only going to cost 150 of your Earth Pounds-Sterling to put in.

That’s £150folks…some of you spend that much by yourselves onpetrol / booze etc. on any given month.

Don’t ask me for improvementsif you guys aren’t prepared to step up and put your cash where yourcomplaints are.

Here’s our lovely UPDATED cash-o-meter:

I’ve started it off by putting £20 of my own hard earned bucks into the effort.. .

Peeps who have pledged that £10 cash-money:

Rick

Graeme (It’s a group effort man,we don’texpect more than £10 off ya, but you’re a gent for offering it!)

so all it will take is another 11 people to pledge a tenner each.

Come on eh? I’ve heard a few muttered private promises, but we need PUBLIC PEDGES.

As soon as we see that green reach the ‘Stoked’ level, I will call the blacksmith and he’ll send his troops up toinstall the new toy within48 hours…

Improvements ? – need cash

Ok folks, we need to raise about £150 (a bargin, believe me) to install a grindy bar of some sort…

Below are your two options: round or flat.

This round onecould be done so it sticks out either end like the one above…or visa versa.

About 350mm high, and about 3m long…?

Either way, it’ll be put into the concrete properly (no boltssticking out of dodgy footplatesor anything) and I reckon thatwhere it’s shown in this photoshop-job is about the best place for it,considering the limitedspace in the park.

So… please:

A: Cast a vote for round or flat.

B: Pledge some dosh for the cause.

– think about it: £10 from 15 people makes this happen.

I’ll even start the ball rolling by pledging £20 towards this rail… and I don’t even skate’em anymore!

Here’sa fantastic skateboard-graph to show us how far we’ve gotten with the Fundraising:

I’ll update it as we get more dosh promised!!!

Peek a boo, I can see you…

No pictures, or news really but there is a gig at Glasgow Academy on Sunday June 24th by the band Devo. If you don’t know Devo then check them out on MySpace or on www.clubdevo.com. They’re a band that started in 1972 (the year I was born!) so they’ve been about a bit.

I’m hoping to go and check them out so I thought I’d give a heads up in case anyone else is interested.

Oh yeah, The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Degree Show 07 opens tonight (Fri 18th May) in case you want to go and check out some ‘ert’…

Transition Extreme / WOTT 07 Reminder [Updated]

As part of my role in Skateboard Scotland I was forced to go and check out the new Transition Skatepark in Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago. Seeing as I really had no choice in the matter I resigned myself to having to roll around on newly created birch plywood creations for a few hours!

The park was designed by Andy Dobson from Aberdeen, Andy sought out Carve designs to help with the construction due to the perfect bowled corners he’d experienced riding the Burnley skatepark. So for the last three months or so Andy, along with Dave and the team from Carve designs have been hard at work. The park is extremely smooth to ride due to the entire floor being covered in plywood which joins pretty much every ramp together, it just flows together nicely. The park is hopefully due to open on the 14th of April, but go check out the website and give them a call to be sure before turning up.

Here’s a few photos to whet your appetite, there’s also an article “Transition Skatepark: Disneyland for skateboarding…” on SkateboardScotland.com with a few more photos too.

Spring Saturday – 07

Rick was up in Aberdeen at the new park on Saturday galvanting around for Skateboard Scotland 😉 while I was hard at work in Dudhope burning off all the pies I ate during the week in the office. I also managed to take a few snaps. It’s a good thing I don’t pretend to be a proper skate-photographer…

Ok… this is a bail, but it’s a beast of a pocket to ollie into, and I like this angle on it.
Alan did eventually land a bunch of these, but never when I had a camera on him.

Here’s another angle on that ollie line. I did witness him landing them eventually so I can safely put these in.

Sorry… I wanted skate, not hang about taking photies. I can also truthfully say; my one battery is rubbish and ran out mercifully quickly…

Mr Casual – McCafferty on the 50 tip.

BTW… notice some extra slabbing up the slope in the background, 2 more rows of paving slabs (unasked for,) beautifully retaining the dirt at the top with a bonus curb, of sorts. Thanks to the hard working peeps at the Dundee City Council Parks Dept.

Hats off to the lads, please. Honestly. You have no idea. Park users be thankful.

Kohler rocks these ollies.

This is Freddy from the Czech Republic, blessing us with a hat-off layback slide in the keyhole. He’s a nice guy. Freddy lives and works in Kirkcaldy, and showed up with a bunch of other Czech guys (bladers /bikers) one of whom managed to break his shoulder right in front of me… wot a bummer. I hope he got to the hospital ok.

End of the Day. Job well done.

Eat more pies.

PS:If you are a regular skatepark user and would like to be able to use the place after dark; please feel free to write to the council, politelyrequestingsome lights…

Happy 1st Birthday Dudhope Skatepark!

February 27th marks the 1st birthday of Dudhope Skatepark!

Congratulations on being 1 year old! For a trip down memory lane you can check out the article we posted a year ago, “27-02-06 Dundee Skatepark now legally open!“. Ah, the memories, how I remember when you were once free (almost!) from blemishes, your concrete skin grey and fresh… 😉

Happy 1dt Birthday!

If there are any budding cooks out there and you want to celebrate then you can find the recipe for the above ‘skateboard cake’ here. Don’t forget to bring some to the park and hand it out…

Japan, Jam and er, Journalism?

Any older skaters reading this will probably remember Broughty Ferry local Nolan Docherty, he’s now in Japan (not sure why, Nolan, why are you there?) and he sent a picture of himself riding a park in Nagoya, Japan sporting one of the DCC Logo T-Shirts. So, DCC is big in Japan.

Now for the Jam, as in Dundee Skate Jam

On Monday 5th March there will be a Skate Jam at the Factory Skatepark from 6pm – 10pm. The event is sponsored by The Ferry Inn, Focus, and The Factory. Find out more at FactorySkatepark.com

War of the Thistles 2007

Building on the success of last year’s event, The War of the Thistles returns in 2007 on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April.

Details are still being finalised, but it’s going to be Scotland’s newest indoor park (so new it’s not even finished yet) on the Saturday – Transition Extreme and Unit 23 in Dumbarton on the Sunday.

Where’s the Journalism?

Um, that’s what you’re reading, supposedly…

Makin’ hay while the sun shines…

Well, sunny day today, lot’s of people making the most of this warm spell at the park, here’s a few pictures from Saturday at the park.

Murray picks his nose.

Commanderson riding his top secret electric hybrid skateboard

Blair 360 flip

Murray tailslides on the saxophone

Murray and Red – Dundee’s answer to Tony Hawk and Andy MacDonald

Blair kickflip fakies whilst ‘wallowing’ in the sun’s golden rays

Someone should make a video with Blair skating opposite and call it the ‘Blair Switch Project’ – Frontside nosegrind and kickflip backside 50

Well, you gotta make the most of sunny days like this!

(Apologies for the crap puns in this article, sun went to my head!)
