War of the Thistles 2009 – Skateboard Scotland Mark Burrows Deck

A couple of bits of news / event info from Skateboard Scotland.

War of the Thistles 2009 and Skateboard Scotland’s Mark Burrows tribute board.

The War of the Thistles 2009

WOTT09 is on Sat May 2nd and Sun May 3rd so get your gnarly boots on and get ready for some good skating!

This year mixes things up a little bit with Unit 23 Skatepark in Dumbarton hosting Day 1 of the event and Transition Skatepark in Aberdeen hosting Day 2. There will be an after party in Aberdeen on the Sunday as it’s a bank holiday so you could hang about afterwards and even go for a skate on Monday, or hit up some of the other concrete up that way.

Check out the WOTT09 page on SkateboardScotland.com for more info.

Mark Burrows tribute board

Skateboard Scotland have wanted to do a run of decks for a while and have now done a run of decks with a board for Mark Burrows.

The boards are now available to order for £35 plus p&p or you can also pick one up at War of the Thistles too. The decks are 8.25 inches wide and have been pressed by A Third Foot here in the UK so they are good quality boards, the graphic was designed by Mark’s long time friend from Tranent Jason J Thomson. Click the deck image to see a large preview of the graphic.

You can buy the boards from the Shop page on the Skateboard Scotland website.

Unkle – Heaven Video directed by Spike Jonze and Ty Evans

If you’ve seen Fully Flared then you’ll have seen all the crazy explosion footage, but this little short music video that they made for Unkle’s song Heaven is pretty awesome.

Don’t try this at home 😉

20 years ago we were ripping it up

Blair posted a link to this gem of a bit of footage from the first ever Factory up on Arthurstone Terrace, Stobswell. It’s from a video called”Fish Hae Gills! Ken Whit Eh Mean?” made by the guys that went by the name Team Warts’n’Boils.

I’m sure quite a few of you reading this weren’t even born at the time this was filmed, and if you’re wondering how Blair got to be such as good skater then it’s worth pointing out that the wee kid ripping it up in this video is none other than Blair himself (probably about 8 or 9 years old I think?). So if you want to know how to get good at skating it’s simple: start young and skate a lot.

I’ve posted links to photos from the first Factory before but here they are again in case you missed them:

Goodbye 2008, Winter Jam at Unit 23, Aviemore Skatepark Petition

Well, 2008 is now behind us, the weather was good enough on New Years Eve that a few people willing to brave the cold got to session at the park as the sun went down.

It was a nice (although pretty cold!) way to end the year with a cruise around our favourite chunk of concrete.

Skateboard Scotland Winter Jam – 17.01.09

Escape the cold outside at the Skateboard Scotland Winter Skate Jam at Unit 23 in Dumbarton

Sponsored by Boardwise, Focus, Clan and more…

1pm – 6pm on Saturday 17th January 2009.

Aviemore Skatepark Petition

There’s a petition to gather interest from people who would like to see Aviemore once more have skateboardingfacilities. Some of you might have skated the old mini ramp outside Chevys Bar which was torn down when it was sold to developers leaving nothing to skate.

Here’s your chance to help ask for something new:

Planning Permission approved for Edinburgh’s outdoor skatepark

Edinburgh locals are celebrating with the news that planning permission has been approved for the outdoor skatepark in Saughton park.

Sam Paterson gave an update on the Skateboard Scotland site:

The City of Edinburgh council planning committee have finally granted planning permission for the construction of the long awaited Edinburgh skatepark at Saughton Park in the West of the city. The project has been almost 9 years in the making with numerous people involved over that time. Two false starts in the Meadows and Inverleith park delayed the project but the experience gained by the team during this time proved invaluable in the winning of this application.

We enjoyed the support of the vast majority of the local community groups, the full backing of the council, the press in the latter stages and the local Police. As ever a small minority have disagreed with the application siting noise and anti-social behaviour as their main objections but we are extermely confident that noise will not be an issue and the skatepark will enhance the area giving the locals more to do.

We will now work towards fine tuning the design whilst the tender is opened up to interested contractors. All going to plan we should get building in the spring of 2009 with the park completed in the summer. The wait has been a long one but the end result will be something special.

So, finally Scotland’s Capital City will get an outdoor skate park!

Edinburgh Skatepark Needs your Help!

Help support Edinburgh’s Outdoor Skatepark project, fill in a form to offer your support!

You may or may not know the length of time that Edinburgh skateboarders have been campaigning to get a concrete skatepark built but has been a long struggle surpassing at least a decade which has involved several people and several hundred hours of effort.

A new application is currently going through the council planning department for the skatepark to get built in the city’s Saughton Park. This application available for viewing and for people to add their comments.

This is where we are asking for your support so we can finally get this park built.

You can offer support by accessing the link at the bottom of this article.

This will open the planning application. In the top left of this window, there is a button labelled Submit Comments, this will open a form where you can add your details, lend your support and add any comments to support the application.

Please note: It doesn’t matter whether you’re from or in Edinburgh at all, it’s all about support for the park in general so go complete the form!

Concrete Fact – bolt edit -22 Sept.

A small nod towards the history of skate spots in around Dundee that eventually led to Dudhope, and hopefully more.

Come along to the art college and have a gander at some old photos from when some of us old-farts were a lot younger, could actually ollie (quite well thanks), and had hair.

BOLT!

I’ve been thinking recently… the jam/comp day didn’t really resolveanything apart from the fact that we all had an amazingtime and that Dundee skatecommunity is alive and well.

‘The Bolt’ trophy is currently on show(see above) and noone has’won’ it in theusual sense this year.

Instead of a formal comp, in which people may or may not be on form, or even able to be there on the day.. why don’t we vote for someone this year?

Kinda like a ‘Man o’ the Year’ (or woman) award forperformance witnessed all year round.

I can’t help but say I would vote for a certain local ‘Injured Gingered,’ but perhaps I should just shut up and let all of you all have the real vote on this.

If you disagree with this concept, please say so.

Or cast your vote below for the man o’ the season. (or woman)

Park Life 2008 – some photos

What an amazing day. Almost lost for words.

Please find below some utterly rubbish photos and even more rubbish reporting (newspaper article and my captions).

Dunno whether the mistiness of some of these pics is due to my rubbish camera, the weather, or the sheer joy of the day. Yes thesephotos areawful as ‘skate journalism’ but I don’t care. I was too busy having a good time.

I’m not even going to put words to all of these. I’ll explain a few, but mostly you can make it up for yourself.

Some slightly less than accurate reporting. Never mind, it’s positive.

Some community shots:

Mr Frontside.

Mr Creature – S.G., Good to see you.

Benson = great shadow

BS 360 slide from Adrian

Jamie’s air-to-sit-down (attempt number 8 or so)

Warren’s roll-up, turn-around and sit on board-and-roll-down-backwards trick. A class act.

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! Adrian wields his stroke-of-genius-board.

Gordon with something big.

Above: Wedo actuallygive a (product)toss. (copyright: D’s clever captions 2008)

Loads of people and action I totally failed to get a photo of. Sorry to anyone who isn’t pictured here.

Esp thanks to Colin Adam who destroyed himself as usual for the sake of a damn good show.

This is a man who definitely earns his professional status, time after time. Sorry, I didn’t get any shots of you… or many other folk for that matter.

Thanks to everyone that came!!!!! Come again. You don’t need an excuse of a fun-day / jam.

Please feel free to email us some photos (which are doubtlessly going to be better than these) and we’ll try and get them uploaded.

___________________________________________________________

BTW: We never actually managed to have anything resembling a “serious” competition, it was far too nice a day to worry about stuff like that.

There is still ‘product’ and THE TROPHY BOLT to hand over… Stay tuned for details of an upcoming “Serious” (Ha!) “proper comp.”
